Trainz Driver Edition

I spotted Trainz Driver Edition at Target last week. The three-disk set sells for $9.99. See my V-Scaler website for a full review.

Cheers,
Al

Trainz DE is probably very nice but it's actually just a DEMO for Trainz 2006!

On my 1.8ghz machine with 512mb total ram, some sort of integrated nvidia video and shared video ram, game won't really run. Scenario Load time is about one hour, frame rate about 1 frame per minute. Turning down detail, using directx instead of Glide, disabling other advanced graphics features (thanks to electronic manual info in this) in config file reduced scenario load time to 20 minutes and raised frame rate to about several frames per second.

To be fair, my computer technically does not quite meet minimum requirements but the stated requirements, IMO, are a bit optimistic. 2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, separate vid card with at least 256mb ram would probably be much better minimum.

Still, if I'd known that I was paying 10 bucks for a DEMO, I would have waited and bought full version of something like Trainz2004 (which would run on my computer) instead. Maybe the box says "demo" somewhere on it but I didn't notice it.

Hate to say it, but Trainz DE is kind of a ripoff. Auran shouldn't have gotten into bed with Merscom, who does a rather shabby job of marketing Auran's ordinarily excellent products. In future, I would buy an Auran product but would probably avoid something with Merscom on the package.

BTW, thanks for making it possible to post anonymously so I don't have to fool around setting up yet another user account for something!
